Pilgrimage at the GDC (1/2)

This year, we were at the Game Developper Conference,  San Francisco. It was a wonderful opportunity to try weird games, meet crazy people and of course, assist to the IGF. Just the first day we met a lot of academics and researchers from Computer Science (e.g. Michael Matteas) to Games Studies (e.g. Celia Pearce or Jose P. Zagal) and many notorious figures of the current video game scene such as  Ian Bogost, Jesse Schell, Jane McGonigal, Raph Koster, Brenda Brathwaite, etc.

Some rumors talk about small inhabited towns downsouth the Rhone (french river, pretty polluted).  One of these mysterious towns is called Valence. Even more mysterious, an event about videogames is taking place there.  (é)mergences the name. Pretty class, like all event with pieces of videogames in it : Dance performance based on videogame character moves. Inspired videogames movies. Arcade stations specially designed, filled with the mighty power of cool indie games such as Space Giraffe, GeomWars, REZ, or Osmos (!!!) And, ultimate bonus item, a 48H Game Contest.

The day Australia became the coolest country in the world.

Why is Australia such a great country ? Is it because  Kangaroos are cool ?  Or because we are so dramatically filled with wonder by camels living free among deadly browns and redbacks ? One of my favorite Australian beer by the way (the redback one, please follow). Because it’s full of dirt, grass free and so wild ? Maybe would you pick up the answer about  girls in bikinis and bbq for christmas ? Or less possibly the one with the wine strangely containing traces of milk, fish and eggs ?

No, the truth is far more simple (even if some of these reasons are pretty cool). It’s because they talk about frenchie garage games on their online newspapers. The famous Australian Kotaku to be more precise -) That, is the truth. Like, you know, the real one.
